A Shakedown Cruise

After trading some honey for future goodies from my friends at the Post Office Cafe, Penny and I launched on a short shakedown cruise. My brother had lent me a bike rack so we strapped on the old man’s bicycle and we were off.

One of the objectives is to zero in on just what I need to bring on next month’s western trip, where to stow stuff so that it doesn’t shake, rattle, and roll as we head over rough spots and negotiate curves. We never heard that when it was all back in the trailer.

Since we had plenty of time and a gorgeous Vermont day, I decided to take Route 100. It was a good diversion – just plain Vermont for much of the way. It is definitely a ski route as we first hit Sugarbush, then the Killington complex, and then Okemo in Ludlow.

As is the case every summer, there were several one lane bridge repairs and many resurfacing projects. We complain about potholes for six months and traffic delays the other six. Friday was too perfect a day to fret over some stops besides, I had no schedule and Penny certainly did not.

One of my favorite spots of this route is the chain of lakes north of Ludlow where a half century ago, I spent several great summers at Boy Scout camp. Now a state park, Camp Plymouth was special. A good friend from those times – a long-time classmate – Doug Allen said to me not too long ago, “Dick, I often wish I was back there weaving lanyards out of gimp.” I certainly agreed.

After Weston, where Dad was in the CCC’s, we came to South Londonderry, Mom’s hometown. There are no relatives left there but many memories.
Mary and I came here to Winhall Brook Campground last fall and loved its peacefulness and beauty. This time I opted for one of the no-hookup sites along the brook.

Of course, the narrow bridge is always a bit of a challenge.

So, Penny and I are on a grassy site right beside the brook. It’s quiet – bird song and gurgling water noises. We just took a good bike ride down the rail trail and after a decent supper, need to go to town for bread and a 3G signal.

Six Weeks To Liftoff

Awaking this morning to a couple of inches of snow, I am happy that not only is the #Airstream winterized and moved to the launch site beside the house, but that we have our winter travel plans well underway. Here’s the “Snowstream” this morning as Penny and I took our morning dog walk.

Tomorrow is opening day of deer hunting so the hunters will love this early layer of white. If it would stay, I’d like it too but this time of year, with the ground still waterlogged, it’s very frustrating to try to snowshoe or xc ski — even if we get another six inches.

I bought a nice new vest for the Vizsla yesterday since we still walk in our woods every day and there are idiots, not many, who are a little trigger-happy. No one leaves horses or cows out until after the season ends.

So, we’ll continue to plan — keep the wood fires going — enjoy the holidays — and before that long, head south where all we have to worry about is wind storms, thunderstorms, and alligators.

Winterizing the Airstream

With temperatures forecast for 22 degrees F last night, I felt pretty smug having a wood fire going in the house and having the Airstream winterized and ready for what we know is up ahead. The fact that I worked on the project a week or so ago when it was rather balmy makes it even nicer. At the risk of much more info than most people want, let me briefly run through the process that I use on the Safari.  Every rig is a bit different but essentially, it’s a matter of getting water out of the lines and tanks and replacing it with anti-freeze.

The first step is to drain the water out of the system.  Some folks use compressed air on the lines to help with this but I just open the drains.  There is the fresh water tank drain, a plug for the hot water tank, and some drains underneath for low points in the lines.  Of course, you should have your black and grey water tanks empty or just containing some anti-freeze.

One of the key steps in the process is to bypass the hot water tank so that you keep it empty and do not introduce costly anti-freeze into it. There are three valves and while I have it in my written instructions, I just close the open ones and open the closed one, and reverse that process when getting the system back in operation in warm weather.

Now, you pump in the anti-freeze.  The previous owner installed a short length of plastic tubing that I can insert in the gallon jug, and after changing a valve near the water pump, draw pink fluid into the system. It’s just a matter of opening a faucet, turning on the water pump, and waiting for the water in the line to discharge and for pink fluid to start flowing. You do this for hot and cold on the sink, lavatory, and shower. Make sure to winterize the flexible spray hose in the sink. (That’s the voice of experience.)  Do the same for the toilet, dump some anti-freeze down all the traps, and you should be pretty well done.

This year, I caught the flush water in a pan and tossed it out the door, keeping it out of the grey tank. It took a little less than two gallons and I think it’s all set.  We’ll see in January in Georgia when we defrost and light off the system again.

Getting Ready For Winter Traveling

With the exterior polishing project shut down due to my knee operation, there’s been a hiatus of sorts on Airstream work until the last few weeks, when I started to get serious about readying the rig for our upcoming trip.  Last week, with cold weather forecast, I drained the water system and winterized it with RV anti-freeze.  There is a sequence of isolating and draining the hot water tank, switching a valve so that the water pump pulls from a gallon jug, and then the pumping until pink liquid comes out the fixture.  I think everything is set — we will find out in late December when we hit warmer weather and get the water running (and hopefully not spraying through cracked pipes or joints) again.

In spite of only getting about 1/2 of the polishing process, the old girl looks ok. I'll bring the polishing gear and perhaps work on it in the SW -- otherwise next summer.

Last trip, I built some shelving for the shower — which we seldom  use — and we found it handy for storing clean and dirty laundry.  This trip, we decided we might want to use the shower (rather than always relying on public facilities) so out the carefully-built wood came and I stored it overhead in the garage in case we change our mind after this jaunt.

I ordered a new latch, and a new air-relief valve for the shower from Out-of-Doors Mart, a fine mail order place for Airstream gear, and after those little tasks were done, I tackled some of the safety systems.

Checking fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and LP detectors, I found that our aged LP unit was intermittent.  It was also too close to the door so I bought a new one and installed it in a better place — after quite a time finding 12v lines available to extend.  Now we need to look at CO monitors and buy a new smoke alarm.  (A lot of the gear is original which means it is 14 years old.)

We stopped using the gas furnace system several years ago because the electric blower was a real energy hog and drained the battery quite fast.  We installed a catalytic heater to take its place and it works quite well.  However, as we found in 2012, the first few nights in Walmart lots can be pretty cold — so I decided to see if we could resurrect the old furnace.

I’ve had really good success getting repair work done at Mekkelsen RV, a local dealer who seldom services an Airstream.  Systems are systems though and they are pros so next week, off we go to get furnace work done.  I also thought, “You know, I don’t want to be driving in West Texas thinking, ‘I wonder if I should have gotten those bearings greased?’ so that’s on the list as well.  They tuned up the rest of the gas system this spring so with this, we should be all set.

The game plan is to move the ‘stream to Merrimac, MA at Thanksgiving and launch from there right after Christmas.  Stay tuned, it’s always an adventure.

‘Nother Cold Rainy Trip to MA

Yesterday, after an early morning lending committee meeting at the community land trust, I came home to finish packing and hook up the Airstream for a trip to Massachusetts. It’s our grandson’s tenth birthday and our daughter’s was the day before.

I had tried to take a short nap after an early lunch since we had a long trip ahead but all I could do was think of the trick of getting backed into Jen’s driveway off a relatively busy road. It’s more than a 90 degree turn and rather tricky — and having several cars waiting in line and watching is never helpful. I decided to get up and get going.

The light rain started just as I got ready to maneuver the truck to hook up. It’s been a while and I was taking my time but with several layers and a raincoat, finished up relatively dry. Still always get grease on my hands from either the ball or the sway bars.

We got the gear and the dog loaded and negotiated our steep driveway. At the bottom, the rear bumper always gets hung up and scraps dirt for a bit — adding a few swear words to the start of the trip.

The drive down was rather easy — traffic light but steady — with some low clouds and fog hanging over the high parts of I-89. The weather got better into New Hampshire, as did the foliage. The photo was taken at the Sutton, NH rest area.

With five miles go go, I started visualizing the backup process — where I would stop the truck, which way the wheel went first, etc. I briefed Mary on her role as observer, director, traffic cop but we both decided to stay cool. Well, either I’m getting better, or getting lucky, but the trailer was angled in off the road right away, letting traffic move — and with just a little geeing & hawing, I got the Airstream situated in the wooded parking place. Voila.

So, we’ve got the catalytic heater going and the inside temperature is manageable. I’ve got a little water in the system but I’m not using it. I’ll winterize either this weekend or next trip down. We are going to leave the Airstream here in MA since we have several trips more in the coming months.

Snowstream

I bought and installed new support rod for propane tanks and after a lot of drilling, was able to paint the parts yesterday — and install and test everything today before the snow hit. Things are buttoned up, the ‘stream is winterized and parked until mid-January, and we’re starting to plan the route and stops for our trip to Texas. With a wood fire going and snow falling, it’s nice to think of warm desert camping.

Yikes! The Airstream is covered with frost this morning – it’s 31 degrees outside- and I’m just starting to read up on winterizing.

I need to get some RV anti-freeze and get serious about getting things ready for winter. I need to get my hands on an air-compressor to blow the lines dry and find out which valves isolate the water heater.

The previous owner left a number of cryptic notes on fittings he changed and tips on draining sumps — and reviewing them, I’m getting a better sense of the process.

RV anti-freeze is about $4.00/gallon and as it turns out, my neighbor has a small air compressor. Now he just has to find the fitting for tire valves (nothing like being a picky borrower.)

So, I’m draining the drinking water tank through the spigot on the bottom and will read once more all the guidance I’m finding online and with the materials that came with the Airstream.

This isn’t rocket science — and once I’ve done it – I’ll have it down for future winters. I’ll tackle it in the next day or so and report back. Meanwhile, I’m checking the forecast – 32 tonight but getting down to 26 later in the week. Tomorrow is winterization day!
